John Moores Painting Prize China

One of the UK's best-known painting competitions, it was started in 1957. I went to the wonderful Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool where the exhibition is held at the end of September, while visiting artist studios in the new creative quarter, Baltic, as well as the Liverpool Biennial.

The John Moores exhibition is held in partnership with the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition Trust, and although the appearance of each exhibition changes, the principles remain constant: to support artists and to bring to Liverpool the best contemporary painting from across the UK.

I hadn't realised that the Prize was launched in China in 2010, and so this year I managed to see a good selection of paintings from China.

In 2012 Sir Peter Blake became the first Patron of the prize. Find out more about his connection to the prize and watch a video of the artist in his studio.

Quotes about the prize

"The John Moores is one of the most prestigious art competitions in the UK and winning the Junior Prize in 1961 is one of the achievements of which I am most proud."
- Sir Peter Blake, artist.
